Benton Central received 4.5 inches of rain on Friday and their was doubt about whether the meet would even be able to happen. The ground was soaked and the ground was soft but that did not keep the boys from being prepared for this race. 15 minutes before the boys race was supposed to start there was a downpour followed by the tornado siren. With the ominous cloud it made sense that we were headed into a delay. Luckily, it was only the monthly tornado siren test and the Patriots regrouped and got to the start line. After the first miles, it wasn’t looking good for the Patriots. The Fountain Central Mustangs and the Benton Central Bison were stampeding and had us behind. Through guts, perseverance, and being totally motivated to rally for the team, the Patriots started to slowing move into better postitions. Patrick Hennessey led the charge with a 3rd place finish in 18:20, Kolton Pearson was 4th with 18:39, Cody Smith was 11th with 19:28, Nate Hennessey was 18th with 20:00, and Marcus Johnson was 25th with 20:20. In a total team effort the Patriots beat the opposition. The boys knew the score would be very close. The announcer counts down….”In 5th place with 127 points, Twin Lakes. In 4th place with 109 points, Frontier. In 3rd place with 70 points, Benton Central (Benton Central had 3 runners in the top 10, so the first sigh of relief came with those words. Then it was the moment the runners had been waiting for. ) The announcer continued, “In 2nd place with 67 points, Fountain Central.” In that moment it was realized by all the runners and the Patriot fans that we had done it! Senior Pat Hennessey was the first to process those words, turning to hug Kolton Pearson as the announcer said, “and your 2018 Sectional Champions with a score of 59 points, the Seeger Patriots! Congratulations to everyone on a job well done!
